The Hidden Costs of Opioid Addiction

The caring professionals at The Other Side Treatment Center (TOS) have learned that most employers are totally unaware of the hidden costs of addiction in the workplace. We believe that it is in everyone’s best interest to know the facts and the true costs that addiction has on the workplace.

Most people are aware of the cost to the addict. A few people are aware of the cost to the family. Very few people understand the cost to the addicts employer. According to the National Safety Council (NSC) “a persistent gap between employer perceptions of impact and the actual human and business costs of substance use.” “Employees struggling with substance abuse miss nearly 50 percent more work than unimpaired coworkers – as much as six weeks a year – but employers do not understand the business costs.”

If you don’t want to take our word for it click on the link for the Substance Use Cost Calculator and see exactly what it’s costing you.

Many businesses will find that the cost can approach five figures per employee  depending upon the business sector. The cost to taxpayers is more than 440 billion dollars per year. The silverlining in this dark cloud is with proper treatment “”Workers who are in recovery, who have received treatment at some time in the past, but who are not currently abusing substances, are less likely to leave their employer, use less unscheduled leave and use fewer health care resources than co-workers with an untreated substance use disorder,”.
